The project called for farm accommodation that would be used only a few days each week. Budget was a major consideration as was the remoteness of the location which would typically add to costs. An existing, small home was in a very dilapidated condition and thought to be beyond repair.
The architect chose to use the existing building as the framework for an extended home. The existing frame of 3×2 pine was wrapped in foil and then clad externally in pallet wood. This resulted in a strong, temperature stable home, comfortable in summer and winter.
Because the home is often vacant, pallet wood shutters can be used to secure the home. They also offer addition insulating properties.
The existing roof was retained but an outer shell of pallets was also added as an aid to insulation.
Recycling the original home and using recycled pallet wood kept the total cost of the development under $400m2.
