For an ageing parent to move into a garden unit or ‘granny flat’ usually means downsizing. That can be a difficult adjustment for many. On the other hand, the move typically occurs because the ‘family home’ has become to hard to manage. By keeping walls to a minimum and ensuring open, garden views, any home can look expansive.
“This unit located in the rear garden, is the new permanent home for the owner’s mother. With the floor area limited by city ordinance to 540 sq ft, several measures were taken to make the small house seem more gracious. These include using high, articulated ceilings, opening walls with uninterrupted bands of windows, and providing an exterior deck as additional living space. Natural materials and lots of light add warmth and character to this (BIG) little house.”
We think it’s got a lovely feel. Do you?
