Maine – Winkelman Architects
Exterior: Hoyt’s Auto Body
What started as a mere “Oh by the way…” mentioned in passing by Architect Will Winkelman’s client at the end of one of their project meetings, is now a conversion project that’s turning heads on the road!
From a “cool old bus in a field,” this 12-passenger capacity 1959 Chevy Viking short bus was restored and transformed into a camper that brings the hippy-Moroccan, 60’s feel. And the owners are extremely happy with the bus conversion!
Designed to maximize flexibility, the Short BUS Retro serves as a camper complete with plumbing (sink and toilet) for family road trips, an extra guests’ quarters for when the camp is stationary and as transportation with seat belts for multiple guests.
The entire project was done by groups, each very talented and skillful in their fields. They all carefully worked within budget, sourcing salvaged parts when needed and where possible. The flooring was a durable salvaged hard pine that was used with its existing surface. This is to make it seem like the floor has been there for years. They also used salvaged fixtures to furnish the camper.
Take a quick tour of this retro camper by viewing our album below and tell us what you think!
Isn’t this the coolest camper that you would want for your road trips? :)
