Cape Town, South Africa – Inhouse

Project Year: 2016
Area: 195.6 sqm

Photography: Riaan West

An enormous entertainment room that includes a pool table, a bar and a skate bowl – what more could a teenage boy wish for? This young surfer/skater is definitely living the dream in their home in Cape Town, South Africa!

This impressive project was indeed not a walk in the park when Inhouse Brand Architects designed its main feature – the skate bowl. Seeing that the existing structure would not be able to support the weight of the framework, the team had to devise an alternative solution. This meant removing the entire floor level, framing the new found space with timber fins, shaping the backing with flexible plywood and polystyrene, and filling level with sand and rubble.

It was an arduous process that took more time than desired, but the end result is well worth the wait. The skate bowl is deeper and more functional, thus making it more enjoyable for the youngster and his friends to use.

But that’s not the only striking element that this multi-functional space has because it also features an ocean wave-inspired ‘backdrop’ for the TV area. This “wave”, which goes from the ceiling down to the floor was built with steel fins and clad with timber. Three LED strips were installed for bright lighting, as well as speakers for a surround sound movie theater experience!

Now to complete this fun and trendy modern industrial design, emerging South African street artist Jack Fox was commissioned to put some impromptu artwork on the walls surrounding the skate bowl. This took him 12 hours of non-stop work until its completion!
