Located just nine kilometres west of Sydney centre, Haberfield sits on Iron Cove, part of Sydney Harbour. Home to historical Dobroyd Point, the suburb was dubbed “the garden suburb” in the early 20th century. It has managed to retain its well-kept parks, tree-lined streets and fine Federation-era houses with immaculate gardens even though Sydney now extends some 50 kilometres further west! The entire suburb is heritage-listed.
Many original Victorian and Federation houses still exist in the area. Renovations and additions must follow strict guidelines ensuring they stay true to the era’s character. Some examples of these guidelines include the total banning of second storey additions unless contained within the existing roof space, banning the demolishion of protected properties, a 50:50 ratio of ‘hard surface’ to ‘soft surface’ on the property and ensuring exteriors are painted in federation colours. Houses must also be roofed with either terracotta or slate tiles.
“This project involved sensitive restorations and additions to a federation dwelling in Haberfield. Originally built in 1904, the dwelling was a display house in the original Stanton Estate. The works involved careful reconstruction of heritage elements from period photographs, and a number of contemporary additions which referenced the materiality of the original dwelling – smooth plaster, dark stained timber ceilings, hardwood finishes.”
