Adelaide Hills South Australia – Max Pritchard Architect
Photography by Sam Noonan
This part of Australia challenges architects with its cool, wet winters and very hot summers. Multi-award winner, Max Pritchard, has specialised in designing exceptionally liveable and clever homes in this area for more than 20 years.
This home is another fine example of his talent, bought to life by the skilled photography of Sam Noonan. These notes are taken from the architect’s site:
“This substantial home is set in a backdrop of large gum trees with views over endless rolling hills of pasture and vineyards.
The long thin form facing north maximizes the use of the sun for winter heating. External louvers over the terrace, may be adjusted for summer shade. Photovoltaic cells on the roof generate electricity, and incorporate a unique feature allowing excess heat to be ducted down to the house to aid winter heating. Roof water is collected in a large underground tank, for use throughout the house.
Timber, corrugated iron, stone and weathered steel provide a timeless rural quality in a contemporary style.”
